It might be because the state of Massachusetts was in the headlines this past week with their historic election, or the fact that the Bee Gees music will never die, but this week Wally has been humming their song “Massachusetts”…the LIVE version! Enjoy!
Monday the 18th – A NEW WEEK! – My contractor Terry was supposed to come by to finish up some projects around my house but was unable to make it. Which is just as well because ‘The Jay Leno Show’ called and asked me to come in at 2 to pre-record a voice-over for a comedy bit. That was perfect, because when I was done I went over to my chiropractor’s office to get an adjustment. When I was finished there it was time to go back to NBC to do the taping of the day’s show. Ringo Starr was one of the guests and it took everything I had to not stand in the hallway just to get a glimpse of the ex-Beatle in person. In fact, my two favorite ex-Beatle solo songs are “Crackerbox Palace” by George Harrison and “It Don’t Come Easy” by Ringo. I could tell Jay was having a great time having him on the show. In fact, when the taping of the show stopped and he was getting ready to shoot some promos, he was having fun with the audience telling them that he was 14 when he first saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan in his parents’ living room. Then he went into a spot-on Ed Sullivan impression and did the whole Beatle introduction that Ed did. It was great! In fact, I wish he would have done it on the actual show! Too cool!
Tuesday the 19th – HERE COMES THE RAIN AGAIN! – It was supposed to pour rain in L.A. all week, and I loved it. Aside from needing a little extra time to get places, I adored the rainy weather. It made everything so shiny…it gave it a glisten…and it got so green and smelled nice too. I went to Digital Jungle in the morning to do a quick session, then I had to get to the Leno Show at 1 to do another pre-recorded voice-over. When I was done I ran some errands, then got back to NBC at 3:30 to do the taping. The rainy weather made me sleepy, so I took great delight that evening in having a wonderful nap under my electric blanket while I listened to it pour outside. Perfect!
Wednesday the 20th – MORE RAIN! – The media had started to really get cooking on the Latenights Wars of 2010. What grinds my gizzard is that they have no idea what they’re talking about for the most part. I won’t comment much on it here, but feel free to read my feelings on the matter by going to my homepage and clicking on A NOTE FROM WALLY REGARDING THE LATE-NIGHT SITUATION. It’s all there. So though it was gloomy skies over L.A., the media was making things gloomier. I could tell that it was affecting some of the people around “The Jay Leno Show.” How could it not? When everyday some numbskull in the media is telling you what a bad guy Jay Leno is for accepting a job after Conan’s demotion? But the greatest thing happened. Now, I don’t have a lot of interaction with Jay around the set. He has his responsibilities and I have mine. And usually they never intermingle. But the show had just wrapped, and I was heading down the hallway to go to my car. Jay was heading out of his dressing room to go to his car in the opposite direction I was going. There was no one else in the hallway except him, coming towards me. I didn’t really know what to say except, “Looking good out there today, Jay. Very funny stuff!” He thanked me and as we passed each other I said, “Keep the faith, dude. It’ll all work out.” I hope he took the sentiment to heart, since all of this really isn’t his fault. I’ll probably remember that interchange the rest of my days. That evening I enjoyed another nap to the sounds of pouring rain.
Thursday the 21st – BUSY THURSDAY! – The rain let up a little bit, and I got up early for a session at Voice Trax West for Avera hospitals. I finished that and stopped by the post office to mail off some autographed photos people had been asking for. I like to mail them off when it’s dry, because hauling the stuff into the post office when it’s raining presents the risk that the signed pictures will get wet. I stopped by my mailbox and picked up some items, then met my friend Sara for lunch. First we went to Studiopolis Burbank to do a quick line or two for “Gormiti.” Then we went to NBC so I could record another voice-over bit. Then we enjoyed lunch at the NBC Commissary. By the time we finished, it was time for me to get back to Stage 11 and do the taping of the Leno show. That evening, you guessed it, another nap to the sound of pouring rain!
Friday the 22nd – A DAY OFF! – There was no Leno show that day because of the Haiti telethon. So I drove over to see my chiropractor in the morning and get another adjustment. On the way back home I was listening to a local talk show, and they were talking about the late-night wars. It’s funny, because when one of the hosts said “The Jay Leno Show,” he imitated the way I say it on the show. It’s weird to be driving around town and hear yourself being imitated on the radio. It’s something I’ve never experienced before. Too funny! I met my pal Scott Sebring and we ran some errands…hitting my favorite Mexican restaurant Campo’s in Culver City, going to Laser Blazer, and stopping by Robinson Beautilities, a costume shop that I used to frequent all the time when I lived on the Westside. Scott’s always been a big fan of The Osmonds, and I knew that the store had all sorts of old Osmond original costumes. I figured he’d get a kick out of seeing them in person, and even trying some of them on! The Osmonds are going to be making an appearance at an autograph show in February, so wouldn’t it be fun if Scott showed up wearing one of the actual costumes? Later I stopped by my doctor’s office in Santa Monica to get my vocal cords checked on, and then we picked up Scott’s wife Vickie. Then we went to It’s a Wrap in Beverly Hills and looked around. We met Sara for dinner at the Studio Cafe, and my friends Patrick and Leslie Owsley were there eating too. I invited them over to Planet Wallywood for Blu Ray Trek night on Saturday. The rain was pretty much over for the time being, but when I got home I grabbed a nap anyway. That way I could stay up all night watching TV and doing stuff around the house.
Saturday the 23rd – SMOOTH SATURDAY! – I got up in the morning to let my maids in, and I went to run errands while they cleaned. While I was at Kit Kraft in Studio City, I saw Eric Idle who was there looking around. I simply said, “Hi Eric. I’m a big fan.” He smiled and said “Thank you!” Nice guy. I said my piece, and left him alone. Then I got home to meet up with my contractor Terry, but he was still not feeling well. So he didn’t come over. I did some stuff around the house and prepared for Blu Ray Trek night. It was a full house too! We had a lot of people and it was a great time watching two original “Star Trek” episodes on Blu Ray.
Sunday the 24th – SLEEPY SUNDAY! – The weather was beautiful and sunny, but it didn’t matter. I spent the entire day resting. Terry was going to try and come over again to finish up our projects, but he decided to come Monday instead. I got to evening church, and then met up with Sara for dinner afterwards. Then we got some grocery items and said our goodbyes. Chuck McCann called me later that night and had me meet him at DuPar’s for pie. I hadn’t seen Chuck in awhile so it was nice to catch up. When I got home, I did some auditions in my home studio and e-mailed them to my agents. Then I prepared for a new week ahead.
And how was YOUR week??!!
