BUILDING A CHARACTER

PART III :
Building a costume
from scratch
Super talented costume designer Rebecca Richards takes the measurements needed to begin designing the costume. Remember, an authentic 1920's vintage looks is imperative for this character, so Rebecca will be experimenting with all kinds of fabrics to obtain the perfect look. Also, bear in mind that only fabrics in the grayscale can be used in order to stay consistent with the "monochromatic" look of the finished character!

Costume designer Rebecca Richards created a mock-up of the costume in muslin (inexpensive fabric) to size and tweak. Then Wally tried on the mock-up so Rebecca could make appropriate alterations. Once the changes in the muslin mock-up were completed, it was taken apart and laid on the yardage of wool (the material that will be used for the finished costume), traced, cut and then assembled. Here, Rebecca alters the hem on the finished wool pants. Soon, you'll see pictures of the finished vest, overcoat, cape and batwings!
